About Southwold

Southwold provides some of the best views in Suffolk. At the mouth of the River Blyth the town has a lovely sandy beach leading north to Covehithe.

Southwold, popular with tourists and local visitors is famous for it’s colourful beach huts. They have such a prime position that each hut sells for many tens of thousands of pounds. The walk along the sea front from Gun Hill to the pier passing by the beach huts is a delight.

The town has a large church, a common, a pier and an art deco cinema that is also used as a wedding venue. It is the home of the Adnams Brewery. You cannot beat a pint of Adnams straight from the cask especially at the Sole Bay Inn.

The lighthouse shown below is well worth a visit. You can climb to the top where there are some magnificent views.

You can often find Morris Dancers dancing in the street. The beach café on the pier sells freshly caught fish with chips at excellent prices. The town also has a wealth of shops and many other places to eat and drink.

The Pier

The clock on the pier is an unusual feature. The view from the end of the pier looking over the town is spectacular. The town is a very popular place and inspiration for artists, writers and photographers.

A footbridge or the Ferry takes you south over the River Blyth with it's lovely moored boats, to the quieter but charming village of Walberswick. Walberswick has a lovely sandy beach and is flanked by sand dunes.

Covehithe just north of Southwold is a quiet pretty beach with stunning yellow cliffs. Parking at Covehithe is limited and the walk to the beach is approximately one mile but it is well worth the effort.

The nearby historic town of Beccles and the Broads are also worth a visit if you are in the area.
