About Happisburgh

Happisburgh is on the North East coast of the County of Norfolk. It is about 14 miles south east of the popular seaside town of Cromer. Great Yarmouth is approximately 22 miles to the south east.

I love to visit this pretty area and walk along the beach to either Walcott or Sea Palling at low tide. You can walk for miles along golden sand and once you get about 100 yards from the excellent pay and display car park you are very likely to have the beach almost to yourself.

The car park is very popular with families. It has a toilet and a children's play area. The proceeds from the car park pay for the facilities. The short walk to the beach is down a slope.

The independently run lighthouse was built in 1790. Originally one of a pair, it is the oldest working light in East Anglia. Furthermore, with a range of 18 miles, the light flashes three times every 30 seconds. You can see the lighthouse from the car park and the bay with it's distinctive with red and white stripes. You can also see inside the lighthouse and climb the tower on open days.

The area has gained a reputation as being one of the fastest eroding coastlines in Great Britain. Even with large boulders in front, the sandy cliffs along this coastline are prone to erosion especially in winter. The landscape is forever changing. Unfortunately with climate change and rising sea levels the situation is likely to get worse.
