About Beccles

Beccles is 18 miles south east of Norwich. It is a market town in the beautiful County of Suffolk, on the River Waveney and is within the Broads area that has National Park status.

The Beccles town sign show above shows the event on 1584 when Queen Elizabeth I handed to John Bass, the Charter of the Corporation

Tannery Score Stone

Tannery Score Stone

The Scores are narrow lanes that lead down to the River Waveney. The name of each Score is stated on the pavement as shown in the photo above. The term Score for a narrow lane is also used in the popular seaside resort of nearby Lowestoft

The Octagon Town Hall

The Octagon Town Hall

Above is a photograph of the Town Hall an 18th century octagonal building. The stone at the front tells you that the town is 109 miles from London.

Bell Tower in Beccles

Bell Tower

The Bell Tower of St Michael's Church dominates the town and market square. The walk up to the top of the Tower is well worth the view with a 360 degree panorama of the town and the River Waveney.

The town has a market that takes place every Friday. There are also plenty of hotels, restaurants, pubs and shops.

The Quay shown below lies off the River Waveney. It is a very popular area for boating and is very busy in the Summer months. It is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.

I love and can recommend walking along the River Waveney to Geldeston where navigation ends. On the walk you will find The Locks Inn a remote but thriving community pub that is a nice place to stop for a drink and a meal. As this is a circular walk the return to the town is along the other side of the river.

Also the nearby town of Loddon on the River Chet is a much quieter place to visit if you are in the area.

If you are looking for a nice family beach I can highly recommend Southwold that is only 14 miles away.
